The key barrier to distributed and dual-use solar is that the cost of support structures and installation is much larger than the cost of solar panels, so arrays are not competitive. The only economically viable solution is to redesign the entire system to reduce this cost.
TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION
Sunspan's innovation is a new architecture using tube-based solar modules that aerodynamic to reduce the wind forces which are the key driver of support structure cost. Moreover, the design allows tensile-structures like suspension bridges for greatly reduced material usage and installation complexity. Key applications include over parking lots, colocation with many types of crops or livestock and even in floating application where the self-buoyant solar tubes need no separate floats.
