ACCELERATING THE RATE OF CLIMATE INNOVATION BY:

Advancing the state-of-the-art in saltwater electrolysis technology, which unlocks several ocean-based carbon dioxide removal pathways that can scale to Gt/year levels.

PROBLEM FOCUS
To reach net zero targets by 2050, we need to ramp-up carbon dioxide removal in our oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers to the scale of global industry. The largest cost driver for engineered marine CO2 removal (mCDR) is often the critical water electrolysis hardware.
TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION
Brineworks is developing a novel electrolysis system that efficiently generates carbon-negative hydrogen as well as acid and base streams, directly from seawater and/or brines. The company then uses those streams for Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) where acid/base chemistry allows for CO2 to be stripped from the ocean entirely, or permanently locked away as stable and safe bicarbonates, respectively.
